In this dialogue, moderated by volume editor David Sloan Wilson, evolution scientist Bruce J. Ellis and contextual behavioral scientists Louise Hayes and Joseph Ciarrochi discuss different perspectives on adolescent development and the behaviors that are typically thought of as “pathological” or “risky.” Together, the scientists explore the different models they’ve created—the evolutionary model of risky adolescent behavior, which helps explain how natural selection has shaped adolescents to detect and respond to the different ratios of costs and benefits afforded by positive or negative environments, and the DNA-V approach to understanding and altering adolescent behavior across contexts—and the different assumptions and emphases that inform each. It becomes clear that both models point to ways that interventions that work to eliminate adolescent dysfunction and disorder via coercion can be replaced with ones that examine challenges adolescents face, attitudes and outcomes they value, and the particular cost-benefit analyses they make based on those challenges and valued outcomes, and from there, guide adolescents to embrace their values while behaving in more prosocial ways.
