In this conversation, moderated by volume editor David Sloan Wilson, evolution scientist Aaron Blaisdell and evolution scientist Kelly Wilson contemplate what evolution science and the contextual behavioral tradition have to say to each other about human behavioral and physical health. The fact that we have organized ourselves into advanced societies and adapted any number of environments to best serve our needs establishes humans as the ultimate niche constructors. And yet the societies we’ve created are far different than the ones to which we are evolutionarily adapted. Which kinds of lifestyle and behavior changes can help correct this evolutionary mismatch? The scientists discuss prescriptions ranging from the attitudinal—psychological flexibility, increased kindness and self-compassion, and the cultivation of more and stronger social connections—to the practical: adopting diets that mimic our ancestral eating patterns, pursuing more frequent and varied physical activity, spending more time in natural environments and encouraging greater amounts of unstructured time in daily life, finding ways to ease the stress caused by the ubiquity of information technology, and more.
